United Nations

The United Nations (UN) is an international organization established in 1945 at the end of World War II, to replace the League of Nations. The goal of the UN is to foster communication and negotiation between nations in order to promote global peace and security. At its founding, the UN had 51 member states; today 193 countries are members of the United Nations.

Hatikvah

Hebrew for "the hope," Hatikvah is the title of the national anthem of Israel. Originally composed in the nineteenth century, Hatikvah was a central anthem in the Zionist movement in the early twentieth century, and continued to be used unofficially as the national anthem of the state of Israel until 2004, when it was officially adopted.

Yom Ha'atzmaut

Hebrew for "day of independence." Yom Ha'atzmaut is Israel's national holiday, celebrated annually to commemorate Israeli Declaration of Independence on 14 May 1948.

Sochnut

Sochnut was formed in 1929 to promote and facilitate Jewish life, education, government, and immigration in the Palestinian region under British administration. During WWII, Sochnut provided aid and visas to persecuted European Jews as well as organizing a significant amount of illegal immigration, exceeding the British quotas.
